Mandatory Gear

(Borrowed from Arrowhead 135 and Tuscobia Winter Ultra; modified for Ice Bowl Winter Ultra)

Navigation

  • GPS (with programmed race points) and compass
  • Course map

Insulation/Footwear

  • Extra down or wool sweater, long john bottoms, wool socks, hat and mittens/gloves in waterproof bag
  • Ice cleats
  • Two foot warmers, two hand warmers & one body warmer

Illumination

  • Headlamp/bike light AND back-up headlamp or flashlight (suggested minimum 100 lumen – or more for bikers – that will last for 12 hours on bike or 24 hours on ski/foot)
  • Extra batteries
  • Flashing red LED lights, both on front and back of sled or bike (or on backpack if skier/runner)
  • At least two red lights are required – one on the front of bike, sled or racer and one on the back of the bike, sled or runner/skier
  • Ten square inches of reflective material on front and back
  • Two emergency flares (check expiration date)

Fire

  • Firestarter (matches or lighter)
  • Fuel (4 fl. oz – either gas, alcohol or one canister of propane/butane 100 grams or six Esbit tablets)
  • Stove

Nutrition

  • 3000 calories (You MUST have 3000 calories of food on you at all times, including at the finish line)

Hydration

  • Insulated water container – 2-qt (64 fl. oz) or just under two litres
  • Pot or container to melt snow (min volume is one pint)

Emergency Shelter

  • Sleeping bag – Zero (0) F degree or lower. However, it can be colder overnight so a colder rating (than 0F) is strongly recommended. Must be in waterproof bag
  • Insulated sleeping pad
  • Bivy sack – must be in waterproof bag (tarps do not count)

Other

  • Two ice picks (on belt or on string around neck)
  • Cell phone (expect limited coverage)
  • Whistle
  • Helmet

Recommended Gear

  • First-aid supplies
  • Duct tape
  • Trekking poles (if running)
  • Watch
  • Balaclava and/or face mask
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm
  • Sunglasses
